🐾 Increased Mountain Lion Activity: Stay Safe This Winter

As winter sets in, mountain lions become more active around Boulder due to shorter days and limited food in higher elevations. With sightings more common near town, it’s essential to stay aware and prepared while enjoying the great outdoors. Here’s what you need to know:
How to Stay Safe While Exploring Boulder:
Be Alert: When hiking or walking in wooded areas, especially at dawn or dusk, stay vigilant.
Keep Pets Safe: Always leash your pets and avoid leaving food outside, which can attract wildlife.
Make Noise: When hiking, make noise to avoid surprising any mountain lions. This reduces the likelihood of an encounter.
If You Encounter a Mountain Lion:
Don’t run. Running may trigger their instinct to chase.
Make yourself appear larger—raise your arms, open your jacket, and stand your ground.
Speak calmly and firmly. Back away slowly while facing the lion.
Pick up small children to prevent them from panicking and running.
Tips for Keeping Mountain Lions Away from Your Property:
Install Outdoor Lighting: Bright lights can help deter mountain lions from approaching your home.
Supervise Pets & Children: Don’t leave pets or young kids outside alone, especially during dawn, dusk, or nighttime.
Remove Attractants: Secure garbage, pet food, and any outdoor livestock to reduce the risk of attracting wildlife.
A Local Tip from Nederland Resident: "Before letting your dog out into your fenced yard at night, always go outside with a flashlight and stand guard until your dog returns. Mountain lions are less likely to approach when they see a human standing nearby."
By staying aware and prepared, you can safely enjoy Boulder’s beautiful trails and open spaces this winter. For more information on mountain lion safety and to report sightings, visit the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website.
Stay safe, Boulderites, and enjoy the season responsibly! 🏞️
