🄾 Mt. Sanitas: Boulder’s Stairmaster With a Skyline

If you’ve ever driven through Boulder and spotted hikers marching up a steep, sun-soaked ridge just west of downtown, you’ve probably seen Mt. Sanitas in action. It’s a local rite of passage—part workout, part sightseeing tour, part dog parade. The name ā€œSanitasā€ comes from the Latin for ā€œhealth,ā€ which is fitting since this 3.1-mile loop will definitely get your heart pumping (or, if you choose the easier valley route, your mind at ease).

Your Three Ways Up (or Around):

  • The Classic Mt. Sanitas Loop (3.1 miles, Medium+): Steep stairs, rocky climbs, and the kind of views that make you forget how much your legs are burning.

  • Sanitas Valley Out-and-Back (2 miles, Easy): Gentle incline, creekside shade at the start, and plenty of room for strollers, joggers, and off-leash pups.

  • Dakota Ridge Loop (2 miles, Easy–Medium): A rolling hogback route with great perspectives of both the valley and downtown Boulder.

Pro Tips:

  • Arrive early—parking fills up faster than your water bottle will empty.

  • Bring sunscreen—shade is in short supply.

  • Expect company—this is one of Boulder’s most popular hikes, so ā€œsolitudeā€ isn’t on the menu.

After your hike, treat yourself to a well-earned coffee at Ozo Coffee—because nothing says ā€œI conquered Sanitasā€ like sipping a latte while looking back up at the peak you just crushed.
