☀️ The Insider’s Guide to the Boulder Reservoir
Beach or mountains? In Boulder, you don’t have to choose.
Welcome to the Boulder Reservoir — or “the Rez,” as locals lovingly call it. With 700 acres of mountain-backed water views, sandy shores, and year-round recreation, this place is pure Colorado magic. Voted the “Best Family-Friendly Beach in Colorado” by Lonely Planet, the Rez isn’t just a scenic splash zone — it’s a full-on experience.
Here’s your go-to guide for making the most of Boulder’s beloved lakeside escape:
🏊 Swim Like a Local
From May 24 to Sept 2, the swim beach is open daily 10am–6pm (Thursdays close at 5:30pm). It’s one of the largest in the state, and lifeguards are on duty. Pro tip: the floating platforms are fun, but kids under 13 need to pass a swim test to swim out past the first rope.
🛶 Boating, Paddleboarding & SUP Yoga
No boat? No problem. Rent kayaks, SUPs, or even a pontoon from Rocky Mountain Paddleboard. Want to sail like a pro? Book a lesson with Community Sailing of Colorado. And for yogis? Try balancing your warrior pose on a SUP board — no judgment if you splash.
🎣 Fishing + Wildlife
Yes, you can fish here! Expect everything from rainbow trout to catfish — but don’t forget your license. Bring binoculars too: ospreys, owls, and prairie dogs are regulars.
🚴 Trails & Events
The 5.3-mile loop around the Rez is perfect for a jog, stroll, or ride. Expect special events all season — from triathlons to the Tuesday night Dash & Dine 5K series.
🍔 Eats, Drinks & Picnics
Bring your own feast or hit the Reservoir Café on weekends for Spruce Confections sandwiches and baked goods. There are 13 picnic sites (nine rentable), volleyball courts, and even horseshoe pits. And yes — alcohol is allowed, just skip the glass bottles (and leave it home on July 4)
❄️ Bonus: It’s a Winter Wonderland
In the off-season, it’s free to enter, dogs are allowed, and the snow-dusted views are straight out of a postcard.
