🥾 Mt. Sanitas: Boulder’s Stairmaster With a Skyline
Nature’s calling. Time to answer.
Whether you’re craving high-altitude air, a sparkling lake, or a canyon with climbers clinging to its walls, Boulder is the perfect launchpad for a quick wilderness escape. And we’re not talking about epic road trips—each of these stunning spots is less than an hour away. One national park, two state parks, and one glorious alpine recreation area. Ready to roll?
Drive time: 1 hour
Jagged peaks, bugling elk, alpine lakes, and more jaw-dropping views than your phone’s storage can handle. Rocky Mountain National Park is a bucket-list classic for a reason.
Do this:
Drive Trail Ridge Road (if it’s open—check conditions first!)
Hike to Gem Lake or snowshoe to Emerald Lake in winter
Spot elk and bighorn sheep in Moraine Park
Camp under the stars (book early!)
🎟️ Heads up: You’ll need a timed entry reservation from May to October. No pets on trails.
Drive time: 20 minutes
Just 20 minutes from town, “Eldo” is Boulder’s go-to canyon for rock climbing legends, creekside picnics, and hikes with views for days.
Do this:
Take the mellow Fowler Trail for canyon views and climber-watching
Tackle Rattlesnake Gulch Trail to see old hotel ruins and the Divide
Fish South Boulder Creek for brown and rainbow trout
Ride the free Eldo shuttle (no reservation needed!)
🎟️ Note: Timed-entry reservations are required weekends & holidays May–Oct (unless you take the shuttle).
Drive time: 45 minutes
Aspens, granite boulders, fishing ponds, and views stretching 100 miles. It’s like Golden Gate Canyon was designed by a very chill Bob Ross.
Do this:
Feed rainbow trout at the visitor center
Hike to Panorama Point for sweeping mountain views
Bike the wildflower-lined Mule Deer Trail
Camp in a yurt or cabin and stay for the stars
🥶 Pro tip: Temps here run 10° cooler than Boulder. Bring layers!
Drive time: 55 minutes
Alpine lakes, glacier-carved valleys, and access to Indian Peaks Wilderness? Yes, please. Brainard is a four-season favorite for hiking, skiing, and soaking in mountain vibes.
Do this:
Hike to Lake Isabelle or Blue Lake for picture-perfect views
Cross-country ski or snowshoe through pine-scented forests
Drive the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway and loop through Nederland
🎟️ Reminder: Parking reservations required (unless you hike or bike in from the Gateway Trailhead).
🧭 Quick Tips Before You Go:
Check road and trail conditions in advance (weather changes fast!)
Pack layers, sunscreen, snacks, and your Leave No Trace mindset
Respect wildlife—if you can’t cover it with your thumb from afar, you’re too close
